Cloisonné is a technique that uses layers of enamel. I start out with chunks of enamel that I grind into a find powder using a mortar and pestle. Next, I shape fine silver wires into a design and apply it to the piece. The resulting cloisons, or cells, are then filled with at least seven layers of thin, colored enamel. Each blended layer is fired in the kiln. The last step is to polish the piece smooth. The results are beautiful, colorful pieces of art.
